Production Crew Offers Mini Documentaries to Coincide with VHS Transfers

Lawrence, Kansas video production company Matty D. Media is offering new options to create short documentaries for clients who have recently digitized VHS tapes.  These mini episodes are the perfect way to re-introduce the newly-digitized materials to the world.  Both options involve a brief interview with the owner of the VHS tapes.  He or she will serve as a host to re-introduce the materials.  The documentary-styled approach will set the table about why it was important to transfer the footage, who “stars” in the footage, what’s going on during that time period, and where the stories take place.  What clients say about these nostalgic moments is up to them.

The first documentary option is to create a 2-3 minute long highlight video.  This short video is a perfect companion as a “play first” episode for those clients who are purchasing DVD’s of their memories.

The second option is an extended cut, or mini-documentary, which is approximately 10-15 minutes long.

How VHS to Digital clients can make affordable documentaries

In each session, clients will be interviewed on camera with a mad-libs styled questionnaire.  They will fill in the blanks about what’s important to them about this footage.  Highlights from their commentary will be edited into highlight videos.   The cost to produce one short video is $460 whereas the extended cut will be $740.  Each service includes a half hour or hour long interview, respectively.  Both services include a highlight video that blends moments from the VHS archive over and throughout the commentary.  A music genre of the client’s choice can play throughout the video.

Below is an example questionnaire that clients of this service would participate in.

  1. What is your name and where are you from?
  2. Why was it important to transfer these VHS tapes?
  3. Who are the characters seen in the footage – family, friends,
    • What role are these people seen in?
      • Athletes, actors, matriarchs, patriarchs, students, professionals, etc.
      • Are there any rivals seen in the footage?
  4. What year or time-period did these memories take place?  What was going on in your life, the world, the nation, at that time?
  5. Where did these memories take place?
  6. Anything else that you want to say about the video library that wasn’t guided with questions?
