About Manhattan, Kansas

Settled among the gorgeous greenery of the Flint Hills, Manhattan Kansas is much more than a college town.  It is the home the K-State University.  Manhattan, Kansas is also affectionately known as “The Little Apple,” which is an actual registered trademark applied by its tourism bureau.  Like most cities sprinkled across the Kansas road map, Manhattan features its share of entertainment, arts, education, and, of course, natural beauty.

The MANHATTAN Sign at Bluemont Hill

One of the most distinctive visuals in the Matty D. Media archive is the large MANHATTAN sign at the scenic overlook on Bluemont Hill. The individual letters are formed with white limestone rocks placed along the hillside. Together, they create a recognizable landmark overlooking the community.

Matty D. Media’s footage features students raking and cleaning the individual letters that make up the word “MANHATTAN.” This activity reflects the community’s culture of land preservation. That connection is especially meaningful because Kansas State University is the state’s land-grant university.

Students in K-State’s Park Management and Conservation program even created a blog through their 200-level course, “PMC 210: Introduction to Outdoor Recreation.” Readers can learn more about the view from the scenic overlook at Bluemont Hill and discover other outdoor hidden gems around Manhattan through the students’ blog.

The footage can support stories about community service, student involvement, land preservation, civic pride, outdoor recreation and Kansas State University culture.

Because recognizable students appear in this footage, available uses may depend on releases and the intended production. Matty D. Media can confirm whether a specific clip is available for commercial or editorial licensing.

Downtown Manhattan Stock Footage

Downtown Manhattan offers an attractive mixture of historic buildings, local businesses, traffic, public spaces and seasonal color. The district centers around Poyntz Avenue and includes many surviving commercial and civic buildings.

Available footage includes wide downtown establishing shots and closer views of recognizable buildings. These clips can help introduce stories about:

  • Manhattan businesses and economic development
  • Kansas State University and college-town life
  • Flint Hills tourism
  • Historic preservation
  • Community events
  • Small-city life in the Midwest
  • Shopping, dining and entertainment

Wareham Hall is one of the most recognizable features along Poyntz Avenue. Its large vertical sign is especially useful for establishing downtown Manhattan.

The history of Wareham Hall reaches back to 1880. The site became a center for performances, exhibitions and community gatherings. Suffragist Susan B. Anthony delivered a lecture there in 1887.

Matty D. Media’s footage places Wareham Hall within the surrounding downtown environment. Streetlights, vehicles, American flags, trees and nearby buildings give viewers a broader sense of the community.

Another available shot features the two-story limestone building at Fourth Street and Poyntz Avenue. This is the historic Union National Bank Building at 401 Poyntz.

Architectural records indicate that a limestone building has occupied this corner since 1885. The property once housed banking operations, a hardware store and a dressmaking shop. It was substantially reconstructed for Union National Bank in 1905.

A preservation profile of 401 Poyntz explains more about the building’s history and restoration. Its textured stone exterior, arched openings and prominent corner position make it useful as both a specific Manhattan landmark and a general image of historic Kansas architecture.

This footage may support stories involving historic downtowns, local commerce, preservation, professional services and the use of native limestone throughout the Flint Hills region.

Manhattan Town Center and Downtown Public Spaces

The archive also includes the fountain near Manhattan Town Center. This footage provides a quieter view of downtown life.

The fountain, green space, trees and surrounding storefronts can create a natural transition between larger establishing shots. Fall foliage adds seasonal color and gives the footage a welcoming community atmosphere.

The Manhattan Convention and Visitors Bureau identifies Manhattan Town Center as part of the downtown shopping district.

These visuals may be useful for retail promotions, tourism marketing, relocation videos, seasonal Kansas content and stories about life in a walkable downtown district.
